The Importance of Actively Aging
July 27, 2017Staying physically active is incredibly important as we get older.
Some of the benefits include:
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Reduce risk of illness and disease
- Improve balance and reduce risk of falls
- Manages stress and improves mood
- Maintain health bones, muscles, and joints
- Get involved in your community
Often times, going to a gym can be expensive, crowded, intimidating, or not quite appropriate for an older individual’s fitness level. However, look no further for local community centers that have smaller, quieter gyms with fitness classes geared to your fitness level! These classes will help you improve your strength, mobility, and balance– in addition to being a great way to socialize with others.
Programs to help you keep active!
One of the most popular senior programs is Silver Sneakers, which offers low or no cost fitness programming depending on your health plan. Participating gyms include:

It is important for older individuals to exercise regularly in order to stay mobile, strong, and reduce the risk of injuries that often include falling. Gyms and group classes are a great way to stay active and socialize with others. Silver Sneakers and local Community Centers offer classes for older persons at little to no cost. City Community centers also offer transportation for seniors, so lack of transportation is not an excuse to avoid the gym! Contact your local community center for more information.
Make sure to ask your physician if there are any activities that are not appropriate for you!
