Exercising together as a couple can be a form of therapy. It helps promote team work, accountability, motivational support, and, plus, you have fun and are spending time together. Personally, I enjoy playing golf, tennis, softball, and running with my partner. It is a good way to get exercise, spend time together, and yet still get the competitive side of you out.
Research shows couples that play together stay together. In Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, researchers found that married partners who joined a gym together, rather than separately, were more likely to stay committed to exercising regularly. In fact, during the course of one year, just 6.3 percent of couples stopped following their routines. Conversely, 43 percent of those who joined a gym separately stopped going. There is something about having that accountability partner help you, who is also your girlfriend/boyfriend or spouse.
Here’s some ideas to try:
- Doubles tennis is a good way to have a double date, while exercising, laughing and enjoying the outdoors.
- Another good exercise is playing golf. Find another couple who enjoys it and get outside and play a round of golf as a foursome.
- There are many leagues in the area that you can join such as: kickball, softball or hiking groups. You can meet other couples who like doing what you are doing and you get to spend good competitive quality time with your loved one.
So try something you like, find a hobby that you both can enjoy and go exercise together!

Aspen Duncan says
The article is titled “Couples who work out together stay together” yet the research shown in the article says that couples who join a gym together are less likely to give up their membership. Is the title trying to imply that couples who work out together stay together as in better marriage odds, or merely that couples who join a gym together are more likely to still have their gym membership a year later?
